The COP26 global climate summit kicked off in Glasgow, UK, on 31 October. Throughout the two weeks of the summit, New Scientist is posting daily updates of all the latest news from the crucial talks, as world leaders attempt to reach agreements that will prevent catastrophic climate change.

The meeting is the 26th “conference of the parties” to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, a landmark treaty signed in 1992. The meeting this November in Glasgow was delayed for a year from 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, and is being co-hosted by the UK government and the government of Italy. Key topics at the meeting will be ending the use of coal, speeding up transitions away from oil and gas, and reducing government subsidies for fossil fuels, which are all essential for tackling the climate crisis.
